technical data Large size conveyor chain Handling
4. Adjusting the chain tension
To keep the conveyor in good condition, install a take-up.
The adjustment length should be approximately 1.5 to 2 chain pitches.
Although there is a method of using offset links (made to order), this is generally not recommended due to economical and strength reasons.
It is important to keep the chain tensioned to a reasonable level so that it is not too tight.
4.1 Chain slack
In the basic layout, a small amount of slack (δ) is required on return-way as shown in the diagram below.
Too much tension on the chain will accelerate wear, and too much slack will cause the chain to ride up onto the sprocket teeth and cause a malfunction.
Chain slack (δ) ≒ 0.1L

4.2 Adjustment Frequency
Chains elongate due to initial elongation until they break in (initial elongation) and then due to sliding wear between the pins and bushings after operation.
Therefore, to always maintain the proper chain tension, it is necessary to make appropriate adjustments using take-up.
The following table shows the approximate frequency of chain inspection and adjustment when operating for 8 hours per day.
If you use the bike for a long period of time, you may tend to neglect to check the take-up, which may cause the chain to become slack and lead to an accident, so please check it regularly.
| Within one week of starting operation | Once daily |
|---|---|
| Within one month of starting operation | Twice a week |
| After one month | Twice a month |
If the operation time per day is long, shorten the inspection interval.
4.3 Adjustment Frequency
4.3.1 When take-up is not enough
If there is still excess slack in the chain even after fully shortening the take-up, remove two links to shorten the overall length.
The method depends on the "method of cut and connect."
4.3.2 Adjust the take-up evenly on both sides
If the two-strand chain has separate take-ups, make sure the adjustment stroke is equal on both sides.
To do this, it is necessary that the lengths of the left and right chains are roughly the same, so please partially swap the left and right chains beforehand to make the lengths the same.
This is not necessary with a linked take-up or a balanced take-up.
If the left and right sides are adjusted unevenly, the chain plates will come into contact with the sides of the sprocket teeth, causing undue force to be applied to the chain.
