technical data Drive chain Roller Chain Selection

12. Temperature selection method

12.1 RS roller chain Temperature Selection Method

Strength is expected to decrease with temperature.

Use lubricating oil suitable for the operating temperature.

・Problems with roller chain transmission at high temperatures

  • 1. Increased wear due to reduced hardness
  • 2. Increased elongation due to softening
  • 3. Poor flexibility and increased wear due to deterioration and carbonization of oil
  • 4. Scale formation causes poor bending and increased wear

・Problems with roller chain transmission at low temperatures

  • 1. Decrease in impact strength due to low-temperature brittleness
  • 2. Solidification and loss of fluidity of lubricating oil
  • 3. Poor bending due to frost or ice buildup

  • Notes: 1. Select using allowable tension selection method.
  • 2. The ambient temperature and the temperature of the roller chain itself are different. We recommend selecting the temperature of the roller chain itself.

12.2 Lambda Chain KF Series Selection Method

Selection is made using the general selection method using kW ratings table.

Strength is expected to decrease with temperature.

Select Lube-free Drive chain by multiplying the value in kW ratings table by the coefficient below.

Use the chain at a speed equal to or less than the allowable speed shown in the dimensions and specifications table for Lube-free Drive chain.

12.3 Selection method for stainless Drive chain (SS/ NS Series) at high temperatures (over 400°C)

As the temperature of the chain increases, its strength decreases. The limit of its use at high temperatures is determined by the temperature of the chain itself.

Please consult us if you plan to use the product in an atmosphere of 400°C or higher. It cannot be used at temperatures above 700°C.

In the temperature selection method, the upper limit of chain speed is 50 m/min.

For chains with a chain pitch of 57.15 mm or more, adjust to the maximum speed limit specified in the allowable tension selection method.

There are two points to keep in mind when using high temperature environments:

  • 1. To prevent poor bending and roller rotation caused by thermal expansion, it is necessary to change the clearances of each part.
  • 2. The higher the temperature, the more likely it is that the chain will change in physical properties, such as breaking under low load (creep rupture).
